Our verdict
The bottom line
The JD ride-on most buyers actually want — bigger than the X167R, cheaper than the X354. Mid X-series, the volume seller. Hydrostatic drive is standard, JD support is universal, resale stays strong. The default "I want a JD" answer for half-acre to acre lawns.

Used-market tip
£2500–3800 used. JD engine hours under 300 is excellent, under 600 fine. PTO clutch test critical — must engage cleanly with no slip. Hydrostatic transmission belt slip is the most common fault — test forward/reverse smoothly. JD service stamps add £400 to fair value.
Where to look: Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree are usually 20–30% cheaper than eBay UK for petrol mowers because most sellers want local pickup. eBay tends to win on cordless and electric (lighter, easier to ship). Always insist on a starting demonstration before paying.
