Our verdict
The bottom line
Mountfield's flagship walk-behind ride-on. The Briggs Vanguard is the same engine fitted to Westwood T1600HE and many Cub Cadet models — properly built. For 3000–5000m² lawns this matches an entry John Deere on capability for two-thirds of the price.

Used-market tip
£1200–2000 used. Vanguard hours under 300 is excellent. Hydrostatic transmission belt slip under load is the classic fault — test on an incline. PTO clutch must engage cleanly. Service history through a Mountfield dealer adds £300 to fair value.
Where to look: Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree are usually 20–30% cheaper than eBay UK for petrol mowers because most sellers want local pickup. eBay tends to win on cordless and electric (lighter, easier to ship). Always insist on a starting demonstration before paying.
