Used-market tip
£140–220 is the used range — anything under £150 is excellent if it runs cleanly. Check the rear roller for play — a worn bearing is £20 to replace yourself. Briggs engines are easy to spot-service: change oil and air filter and most issues vanish. Avoid if rust on the deck looks structural rather than surface.
Where to look: Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree are usually 20–30% cheaper than eBay UK for petrol mowers because most sellers want local pickup. eBay tends to win on cordless and electric (lighter, easier to ship). Always insist on a starting demonstration before paying.
